Mills is an independent liberal arts college, offering Bachelors Degree programs for undergraduate women and graduate programs for both women and men. Concentrations are offered in photography, painting, ceramics, sculpture, electronic art and video. Textiles and fiber are often employed in the area of sculpture. The MFA program combines studio practice and theory. Theory is offered the first year, during which students are encouraged in their studio practice to experiment outside of their initially stated concentration. In the second year, studio work focuses on the student's final choice of area of emphasis. Mills educates its students to think critically and communicate responsibly and effectively, to accept the challenges of their creative visions, and to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the natural world and effect thoughtful changes in society.
